If you live in the US you've probably heard about the statements made by the current Bachelor. For those of you who aren't in the states or just not a fan of reality tv the Bachelor is a show where a man dates 25 women at the same time trying to find his "true love". When the season is over the woman that doesn't get chosen usually becomes the Bachelorette who does the same thing, but with 25 men and so on and so forth. This is important. Anyway the current bachelor is Juan Pablo who was a soccer star from somewhere were soccer is important. Well when asked if there will ever be a Bachelor with a gay or bisexual man he made some controversial comments (shocker). I don't have the transcript in my hand, but basically he said that it wouldn't be kid friendly and he does have some gay friends and they can be perverts. Well needless to say that was jumped on asap. He apologized on his facebook and said that English isn't his native language and what he said didn't come out right. Now I'll admit that I'm a guy that believes the first reaction rather than the quick apology, but I will say that if English isn't your native language you do get a bit of a pass. English is a hard language for even the native speakers. He is also working with GLAAD on an event for homosexual acceptance or something like that (you can tell that I'm not mentioning this for the details). He apologized and I think does feel bad, but I still think he meant what he said about it not being "kid safe" for a gay bachelor. A tweet said it best about him dating 25 women at the same time. Those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones as they say.
The point I'm trying to make is clearly we are making some progress. Not too long ago is was perfectly ok to refer to a gay man as sissy or pansy. That isn't ok anymore. The fact that those comments get people angry is a sign of the time. Another person who made a statement along those lines was that guy from Duck Dynasty. Basically it's a show about a family that makes duck calls and are super religious rednecks. He was suspended but reinstated after the backlash of the suspension. That guy doesn't so much get a pass, but it's not really shocking. You can't be shocked when a Redneck says something that a Redneck would say. That's like being shocked when a dog barks at you. In this day and age you just gotta have a thicker skin and remember where things are coming from. A redneck saying something racist or homophobic isn't shocking. Just don't watch or go near said redneck.
